Sharing LoCAL Nepal’s experience in the 10th Conference on Community Based Adaptation, Dhaka Bangladesh


The 10th International Conference on Community Based Adaptation (CBA 10) was organized in Dhaka, Bangladesh during 21 – 28th April 2016. The focus of the Conference was on enhancing urban community resilience. The CBA10 aimed to share and consolidate the latest developments in community-based adaptation practices, policy and theory across sectors globally. Additionally, the Conference intended to strengthen the existing network of practitioners, policymakers, planners and donors working on all levels of community-based adaptation, and enhance the capacity of practitioners, governments and donors to help improve the livelihoods of those most vulnerable to climate change.

A total of 250 participants from 40 different countries took part in Conference including Mr. Ek Raj Sidgel and Ms. Pushpa Koirala from Nepal- representing LoCAL Nepal- as practitioners working in field of climate adaptation. Mr. Sigdel shared his experiences and views on funding mechanisms within the existing government frameworks on climate change finance for community based activities as a Panel Member.  While Ms.  Pushpa Koirala shared lessons and best practices around gender issues on climate change in the parallel youth conference. The Conference was important in terms of learning and sharing and thinking “Out of box.”
During the conference, participants produced and presented posters on climate change adaptation. A poster on Climate Change Governance in Nepal was shared during the conference, highlighting Nepal’s  experience of  LoCAL. The Participants, especially from Mali expressed their interest in learning more on the LoCAL’s funding mechanism, its processes, working modalities and issues/challenges in Nepal.  
To sum up, the Conference was fruitful in terms of sharing LoCAL’s experience and expanding knowledge on community based adaptations and learning from other countries. The Conference was concluded with a call for Governments, NGOs and infrastructure investors to work together with urban community federations to mainstream and finance local climate change adaptation.
